Firearm Accidents are Preventable

As we all know there are always two sides to every issue. Firearm laws are no different. There are people who believe the government should have a lot more control over who can and who cannot own a firearm. Mostly, the reason people want stronger gun laws is because firearms can injure or kill people. As a result, many times firearms are blamed for accidental injuries and or deaths. However, the reality is that most firearm accidents are preventable. Firearm accidents occur because people do not handle them properly.

A firearm, unloaded, with a safety lock on it, in a locked box is not going to be able to do any sort of damage. It can’t kill anyone and it won’t injure anyone. The problems come into play when a firearm owner leaves a firearm out, loaded and without a safety lock on it.

There are firearm rules in place for good reasons. Not everyone has seen, handled, used and understand what a firearm is and does, so any firearm owner needs to follow the firearm rules. When keeping a firearm in a home it should be locked up safely at all times. Even if the firearm owner does not have any children in the home the firearm should still be safely tucked away.

It is also recommended that firearms and the ammunition that goes with them be kept in separate locked containers, in separate locations. The purpose of keeping them in separate boxes and in separate locations is that in case one of them is opened there is still another level of safety in place.

Firearms are accidentally discharged when someone who is unfamiliar with what it is comes across the firearm. So another layer of prevention is by making sure anyone in a home with a firearm has been through a firearm safety course. In reality, it wouldn’t hurt for anyone to go through a safety firearm course in case you ever come across a firearm. That way he or she knows what to do instead of being afraid of it or too curious about it.

Other firearm accidents happen on firing ranges when people who do not know how to properly use a firearm point it in the wrong or incorrect direction. Any time a person has a firearm in their possession it should be pointed in a way that if it accidentally fires it will do little or no damage.

Along those same lines firearm accidents are preventable on firing ranges when people are aware of what is beyond their target. Accidents happen when someone fires that firearm, misses their target and accidentally injures someone or property.

Many times firearm accidents happen because someone was not following the rules of firearms. A firearm in and of itself can’t injure or kill someone. It’s only when a person pulls the trigger of the firearm that someone can get injured.

Firearm accidents are preventable if people take the proper precautions. Being a firearm owner is a great responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Keeping all firearms unloaded, with safety locks and placed in safety lock boxes is the best way to prevent a firearm accidents.
