We have all read about awful accidents happening when loaded firearms are left lying around. Firearms can be dangerous when in the hands of a person who does not understand how to handle one, or who is simply curious about what it is and what it does. Most children are truly just curious about what a firearm is so talking to them about it gives them an opportunity to gain that knowledge. By taking away the mystery of the firearm the child is less likely to be curious enough to pick one up and accidentally discharge it.
It is important to keep in mind that even if you do not have children living in your home you could have child visit your home someday. If you are not in the habit of properly securing your firearm there could end up being a horrible accident. By taking the proper precautions now, every day, even if you have an unexpected guest come to your home you will be prepared.
Owning a firearm is a big responsibility. If you are going to be a firearm owner you must safely secure your unloaded firearm with a safety device. You can use either a trigger lock or a cable lock, but make sure the kind you are purchasing has been approved by the state you live in. It is also recommended that you place your unloaded safety device locked firearm in a locked box or gun safe. Remember always keep your ammunition locked up in a separate location.
